BSc (Hons), FRAS, RSciTech, TIMMM, MInstP, AMIMA, CAT

I am a Registered Science Technician and Fellow of The Royal Astronomical Society,  interested in how things work and the way they relate to each other. In my spare time I study how the sub atomic relates to the molecular bonds that hold matter together. At present I am employed with Quartz Scientific,  where we work as a close knit team, undertaking various chemical tests that meet strict conditions set out by the  UKAS accredited standards committee. Each section of a test must meet exacting standards to ensure any follow on procedure can be performed successfully. We specifically test  construction material from micro to macroscopic sizes, both physically and chemically, ensuring all tasks adhere to the appropriate safety standards.

I carry out potentiometric and Volhard titration. I also use Inductive coupled plasma spectrometry (ICP -OES). This is a  is an analytical technique used to determine how much of certain elements are in a sample. The ICP-OES principle uses the fact that atoms and ions can absorb energy to move electrons from the ground state to an excited state.

Having previously achieved an Honours Degree in Astrophysics with the Open University, I am currently studying for a second undergraduate degree (again with the Open University), this time in Biochemistry. It is my hope to gain an understanding that stretches from the Schrodinger Equation to the macroscopic structures that form the matter that makes up the Universe. My guiding influence is the thrill of learning new skills that add to an ever growing understanding of the nature of science.

Current Employment :
Quartz Scientific
Laboratory Technician (Chemical Testing)
January 2022 - Present

Chemical analyses such as titrations, gravimetric analysis, use of ion selective electrodes and spectroscopy in accordance with accredited methods and quality procedures. Training is given internally on each method and techniques as the requirements arises.

Previous Employment :

ACS Group of Companies, Poole

Laboratory Technician (Physical Testing)

September 2019 - January 2022

My present employment allows me to bring my love of science to life with a hands on role testing construction material and soils for durability, strength, and water absorption. Each test is performed according to strict British guidelines and must be reproduceable and accounted for, to ensure customers can carry out construction work safely and within government guidelines. The tests vary from measuring chemical reactions at the picometre scale, grading construction and recycled material, and compressing concrete to examine pressure faults.

Whatever task I undertake can take hours of preparation and must be precisely accounted for at every step. The key factors of the role are precision, accuracy, accountability and repeatability.
